I. ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND AUTHOR

1. Genre

Living and dying in flight is classified in the genre of short stories. In Vietnam, around the beginning of the twentieth century, this concept was quite new. The Middle Ages also had stories or other works of narrative nature, but none of them showed the basic features of this genre.

The short story is a type of narrative, its most basic feature being short. However, the degree of length does not completely determine the nature of the genre. As mentioned above, many medieval (narrative) works cannot be classified as short stories because in addition to their capacity, short stories also have some other characteristics.

Unlike long stories (for example, novels) and medium stories, which often represent the entire life of a character, an event, a situation, etc., a short story is just a slice, a moment, a well-known phenomenon. turn on (also maybe out of the ordinary) of life. To ensure with a small volume that conveys great meanings, the language of short stories must be as concise as possible. The “redundant” details (for plot content), cumbersome details are omitted to focus on the most important details. In the short story, it seems that the reality of life has been “compressed” in order to highlight a phenomenon, an essential feature in human relations or in the life of the human soul.

2. Author

Pham Duy Ton (1883-1924) is one of the few people with the first achievements in the genre of modern short stories, of which “Living and dying while flying” is the most prominent work.

Although still under the influence of traditional moral trends, Pham Duy Ton’s short stories were inclined to reflect the corrupt social reality of that time. In Living and Dying, he denounced the ruling class as cruel and inhuman, only gluttonous, and left the people in flood.

II. BASIC KNOWLEDGE

1. The short story “Living and dying while flying” can be divided into 3 parts:

  • Paragraph 1 (from beginning to “This dike is broken”): Risk of dyke breaking and people’s support.
  • Paragraph 2 (continued to “Dieu, you!”): The father-in-law is irresponsible, absorbed in gambling while helping the dike.
  • Paragraph 3 (remaining): The dyke broke, the people fell into grief.

2. According to the definition of contrast:

a) Two basic contrasts in the story of Living and dying despite flying: On the one hand, people are struggling, fighting the wind and rain with great stress and hardship. On the other side is an official who protects the dike sitting in a safe place, leisurely, engrossed in gambling, does not allow anyone to disturb his game, considers gambling as the first, leaving the people alive and dead when the dike breaks.

b) People who support the dike: Work continuously from afternoon to nearly one o’clock at night. They swam in the mud, wet as a rat, everyone was tired; while the rain poured down, the river water billowed up. The author commented: “The situation looks tragic.”

c) The official who goes to the dike will sit in the communal house in a safe, high place. Some people scratch their feet, some people cool off, the hands and feet sit to serve cards. The scenery is leisurely, majestic, and dangerous. Quan just loves the post. Instead of bathing in the rain, washing the wind, standing on the dike to urge, the mandarins sat leisurely, with servants and subordinates. Quan is harsh when someone reports breaking news. The red-faced man demanded the old way, jailed people to report broken dikes. And he continued to be glad that he had played the game, despite the people falling into the dyke break, an indescribable “sad situation”.

d) The author sets up two contrasting scenes for the purpose of comparing and highlighting the contrast. Responsible people are irresponsible, just addicted to gambling. The people had to soak in the rain and wash the wind, toil and fight against nature desperately. In the end, the irresponsibility of the official led to the collapse of the dike. The mandarins are happy because the cards are high, the people are miserable because of the flood.

3. a) Leveling has been used to describe the dire situation of the dike. Rain every now and then. The river water is rising. People are exhausted and exhausted.

b) Leveling up is also used to describe the irresponsible attitude of an official. The dyke protection officer did not support the people but sat in the stable and safe communal house. How many people have to serve officials. Not for work, but for a hobby. Quan played cards leisurely and leisurely. Criticism when someone disturbs. Quan scolded, demanded the old way, jailed when someone reported a broken dyke. Quan is happy because the game is buzzing. The level of irresponsibility and unreasonable irritation of the mandarin is even more evident.

c*) The combination of contrasting and leveling art denounced and criticized the mandarin’s greedy and irresponsible gambling. If the official only likes to gamble, it is a bad habit in his personal life. But he gambled while on official duty, especially when he went to protect the dike, related to people’s lives and property, it was irresponsible. If he wins the waiting game, it’s normal for him to be happy. But he wins cards when the dyke breaks, he is happy when so many people suffer, in extremes, his joy is an inhuman act of a wild animal. It is this combination that deepens the denunciation and criticism.

4. The real value of the story “Living and dying despite flying” reflects the face of the ruling class, typically the mandarin who has the role of “parent” of the people but has only indulged in gambling and is extremely irresponsible. responsible, causing the people to suffer because of broken dykes and floods.

The humanitarian value of the story is to sympathize with the hardships and misery of the workers in the face of natural disasters caused by the irresponsible attitude of the mandarins.

Artistic value: This is a short story written in a modern style in Quoc Ngu script. The character has initially had personality. The author has used contrast, leveling, combined with direct commentary to denounce and criticize. The character of the father and mother has revealed his evil and irresponsible nature through his actions and words to his limbs and to the people.
