I. Bài mẫu
Đề: Một cuốn tài liệu có 200 trang, giáo viên nhờ 1 học sinh lật giở từng trang và đánh số trang liên tục từ 1 đến 200. Hỏi học sinh đó phải đánh tất cả bao nhiêu chữ số?
Nhận xét: Loại bài này có nhiều cách giải. Chẳng hạn tính số chữ số từ trang 1- 10; từ trang 11 – 20;……..91 – 100; 101 – 200, cộng lại sẽ được đáp số. Tuy nhiên đây là cách “thủ công” và mất nhiều thời gian nhất. Nên áp dụng một cách giải “thông minh” hơn.
Giải:
Giả sử cả 200 trang đó đều phải đánh đủ 3 chữ số cho mỗi trang thì tổng số chữ là: 3 x 200 = 600 (chữ số).
Nhưng thực tế theo cách ghi được chấp nhận thì 9 chữ số đầu từ 1 – 9 không cần “00” đứng đầu. Nghĩa là bớt được 2 x 9 = 18 chữ số. Các trang sách từ 10 – 200 thì chỉ có từ 10 đến 99 không phải đánh số “0”; nghĩa là bớt được 90 chữ số. Suy ra số chữ số “0” bớt được là 18 + 90 = 108 (chữ số).
Vậy tổng số chữ số HS cần đánh vào các trang Tài liệu là
600 – 108 = 492 (chữ số). ĐSPT

Dãy số tự nhiên liên tiếp từ 0 đến 2016 có tất cả là:
(2016 – 0) : 1 + 1 = 2017 (số)

PP giải: Muốn tìm dãy số có bao nhiêu số, ta lấy:
( Số cuối – số đầu) : d + 1
Trong đó d là hiệu của 2 số liên tiếp nhau:
+ Nếu dãy số tự nhiên liên tiếp thì d = 1
+ Nếu dãy số lẻ liên tiếp thì d = 2
+ Nếu dãy số chẵn liên tiếp thì d = 2
Bài 3: Để đánh số trang của cuốn sách dày 98 trang người ta dùng tất cả bao nhiêu chữ số?

Để đánh 9 trang đầu của quyển sách người ta dùng: 9 chữ số từ 1 đến 9Số trang còn lại là: 98 – 9 = 89 (trang)
89 trang này được đánh từ số 10 trở lên nên mỗi trang dùng hết 2 chữ số, vậy 89 trang dùng tất cả là: 89 x 2 = 178 ( chữ số)
Để đánh số trang của cuốn sách dày 98 trang người ta dùng tất cả là:

Một cuốn sách dày 94 trang. Người ta đã dùng các chữ số để đánh số trang của quyển sách đó bắt đầu từ trang 1. Hỏi người ta đã phải dùng tất cả bao nhiêu chữ số?

Để đánh 9 trang đầu của quyển sách người ta dùng: 9 chữ số từ 1 đến 9
Số trang còn lại là: 94 – 9 = 85 (trang)
89 trang này được đánh từ số 10 trở lên nên mỗi trang dùng hết 2 chữ số, vậy 89 trang dùng tất cả là: 85 x 2 = 170 ( chữ số)

Ngoài ra nếu ai tìm hiểu kỹ về kỹ thuật đóng sách sẽ biết phỏng đoán: Mảng sách rơi trên là do lỗi nơi đóng sách. Vì số tờ sách rơi ra chia hết cho 4.

Ta suy luận: Nếu đánh số quyển sách bằng các số 001, 002, 003,…, 009, 010, ta phải dùng thêm 108 chữ số “0”. Với cách đánh số mới này, ta phải cần tới 1392 + 108 = 1500 chữ số. Vì mỗi số có đúng 3 chữ số nên có tất cả 1500:3=500 số, bắt đầu từ 001. Vậy quyển sách có 500 trang.

Nếu trang bị rơi đầu tiên đánh số 387 thì trang cuối cùng sẽ phải là số lớn hơn và phải là số chẵn. Điều kiện này đề bài không cho nhưng suy luận được
Do vậy trang cuối cùng phải là 738.
Như vậy, có 738 – 378 + 1= 352 trang sách (176 tờ) bị rơi.
Ngoài ra nếu ai tìm hiểu kỹ về kỹ thuật đóng sách sẽ biết phỏng đoán: Mảng sách rơi trên là do lỗi nơi đóng sách. Vì số tờ sách rơi ra chia hết cho 4.
